Strawberry picking in winter!

I am a native Floridian, so when I think of Strawberry picking, I think of Plant City, Florida and the Strawberry Festival.  Well even though it was a chilly 37 degrees Fahrenheit in Seoul, far from the warm Florida weather that we’re used to, it was nice to know there were strawberries ripe for the picking!  We decided to book with Goh Travel one of many companies who organizes day trips here in Seoul.

Goh Travel took us to visit an organic strawberry farm about 1.5 hours from Seoul and then to Doomulmeori (Beautiful River) Park.

When you first arrive to the farm, you are taken to the dining area where you prepare your lunch for after you are done strawberry picking.

On the menu was Tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) with a Strawberry Sauce. It was very easy to prepare.  First you take the pork cutlet, coat it in flour and shake off the excess, then dip it in egg and then cover it in the bread crumbs.

Then it was off to the greenhouses to see the strawberries!

I was surprised how nice the rows of strawberry bushes were.

And let me tell you that being able to have all the strawberries you want while picking them is GREAT! They were extremely sweet.

Each person was provided what I would consider a quart size box (a lot of people filled it up so high the box wouldn’t close). I felt like I had a good amount to take home.

After a the labor intensive strawberry picking, we were ready to eat! The strawberry sauce on the tonkatsu was very tasty and there was of course rice, banchan, and a soybean soup to accompany the meal (for those of your who are big eaters, you could have as much food as you like).  One person in our group ate 5 tonkatsus (no it wasn’t me)!

It is great that their strawberries are available for picking even in the winter (thank you greenhouses!).  Considering the price of strawberries I’ve seen in the stores and at fruit stands, the cost was pretty reasonable considering that we had transportation, lunch (it was 30,000 won per person), and went to a nearby park.  Overall it was a nice trip to do some strawberry picking and I would go again. It is definitely a fun group activity and a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
