Motor City Pizza (Seoul, South Korea)

I’ve been hearing raves over this Detroit style pizza joint called “Motor City Pizza.” Call me uninformed, but I’ve heard of New York Style pizza and Chicago Style pizza, but never Detroit Style. For those of you who like me are apparently not in the know, Detroit Style pizza is a square pizza that has a deep dish crust and the sauce is on top of the cheese. Many times the crust is actually baked twice and supposed provides a chewy middle but crunchy crust.

Scott loves some pizza, so we decided to stop by for a look (and taste of course)

First thing is when you’re looking for the restaurant make sure to look up, I didn’t see any signage at street level, but luckily I had a good idea of where the restaurant was.

Motor City

F2, 140-1, Itaewon-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea (서울시 용산구 이태원로 140-1, 2 층)

(Same building as Lobster Bar and Mr. Foot)

When we walked into the restaurant I was pleasantly surprised, it’s really quite spacious inside with a huge bar and definitely an industrial vibe you would expect to associate with Detroit. We sat by the window so we could people watch.

We were advised by the server that they were out of wings and shrimp and sweet corn.  I probably would have tried the wings, but there’s always next time. I  had heard really good things about “La Mafia” and so we ordered that along with a side of the Grilled Broccoli with Basil Pesto.

The broccoli came first, and I was pleasantly surprised by the taste.  The sweetness of the lemon curd paired really nicely with the basil pesto.

Then came our pizza, the size of the pizza does’t look that big, but it is definitely on the thicker side.  I kind of liken Detroit style to really beefed up breadsticks.  I was disappointed that the cheese wasn’t really melty, it was actually a little too chewy for my liking.

I will have to admit that I’m definitely a New York Style pizza kind of girl.  Give me a nice thin chewy crust any day.  I would return to Motor City Pizza if friend’s wanted to go, but I don’t think I will ever crave this style pizza.  Next time, I’ll be trying the wings and the fried eggplant (lots of tables order the eggplant and they all looked quite happy).
